Includes the simulation and forecast of atmospheric variability and oceanic variability, with numerical simulations and real-time forecasts performed from the very top of the atmosphere to the very bottom of the ocean.

Description: SC'18 Workshop Paper & Presentation -- Models used in high performance computing often require that large amounts of data be written to disk.  In order to achieve a more accurate simulation there is a desire to increase model resolution, which leads to an increase in the amount of data being written to disk.  However, this increase in model resolution is typically met with prohibitive performance degradation, a significant portion of which is a result of the massive increase in the amount of data being generated and written to disk.  In this presentation, we present work on the implementation and testing of asynchronous I/O in the Navy Global Environment Model (NAVGEM) using the Earth System Modeling Framework.  We observed up to a 38% decrease in model runtime for simulations on 6,600 processors, and up to a 45% decrease in model runtime for simulations on 8,600 processors.
