Description: This seminar provides a hands-on introduction to the ACTIVATE High Security Platform (HSP) (https://activate.hpc.mil) as a unified interface for accessing and working with HPCMP resources across on-premises and secure cloud environments. The focus is on quickly getting connected, navigating your workspace, and running common workloads.
Participants will log in and work through core capabilities, including accessing assigned resources, using preconfigured Marketplace templates, and launching example workflows. The session also introduces the Parallel Works CLI for users who prefer terminal or local VS Code-based workflows, with guidance on authentication and essential commands.
By the end of the seminar, attendees will be able to access HPCMP resources through ACTIVATE, launch standard workloads, and understand when to use the web interface versus the CLI. Advanced capabilities such as private LLM deployment, workflow development, and multi-site execution will be briefly introduced and covered in follow-on sessions.
What is ACTIVATE HSP?
The Parallel Works ACTIVATE HSP for the HPCMP community is a single control plane for on-premises and cloud computing resources that also provisions HPC clusters in the cloud as if they were personal supercomputers. It is accessible at https://activate.hpc.mil.
Any HPCMP user with an active pIE account is eligible to use ACTIVATE HSP. User accounts and personal workspaces are automatically created on first login via the standard HPCMP CAC or YubiKey login interface. All users' personal workspaces and cloud resources are certified for IL5 and can be used for CUI and ITAR-restricted code, applications, and data. Projects can bring their own cloud funding, and a modest cloud budget is available for testing and development. AWS is currently authorized for IL5 High with Azure, Google, and Oracle clouds rolling out in the upcoming months.
Parallel Works provides a library of workflows that users can run out of the box (such as private LLMs on the HPC systems, finetuning examples, n8n, etc.) or leverage the YAML-based workflow framework for building their own workflows.
The Purpose of ACTIVATE HSP
HPCMP adopted ACTIVATE HSP to enhance and encourage use of program resources in three ways:
- Establish a uniform gateway to on-premises HPC and secure, customizable, multi-cloud computing via web, CLI or REST API,
- Provide access to cloud storage to support computing needs and site-to-site data transfer,
- Empower users with a flexible, user-accessible workflow framework that runs graphical, HPC, and AI/ML jobs in hybrid environments (i.e. on-premises and cloud) and allows users to collaborate securely on workflow development.
Getting Help with ACTIVATE HSP
HPCMP-specific documentation is available at https://dashboard.hpc.mil/private/users/docs/general/pwACTIVATEUserGuide.html. General ACTIVATE documentation can be found at https://parallelworks.com/docs. Users may contact the HPCMP Help Desk with initial questions. More complex issues will be escalated to the Parallel Works team.
