Description: This seminar will present an overview of LIKWID and discuss LIKWID tools that are applicable to generating measurements as required for Roofline plots.  The aim is to provide users with tools to relate performance to a system’s limitations in a quantitative sense. Roofline plots are useful in answering the ultimate question in performance optimization, “Is the application truly getting good performance?”

This seminar is a follow-on to An Introduction to Roofline Plots training and LIKWID Performance Engineering Tools.  It is suggested that attendees unfamiliar with roofline modeling or LIKWID tools review these training modules.

Previous Roofline training delved into the generation of roofline models using theoretical formulas.  Previous LIKWID tool training presented an overview of LIKWID tools and discussed the tools available.  This effort introduces the application of LIKWID tools to generate measurements required for roofline plots.

LIKWID is a set of command line tools that can be used to

  • Understand compute node topology
  • Understand how to pin threads to virtual/physical cores
  • Measure performance of a core or compute node
  • Measure bandwidth using a core and a compute node
  • Measure hardware performance counters for flops
  • Measure application performance
