Description: In this seminar we demonstrate how we can launch multiple Singularity containers that communicate with each other via network virtualization and also interface with the user via an XFCE desktop running through a web-based noVNC client. Our demo case is in the area of combat vehicle robotics (CoVeR), where we launch a number of different inter-communicating services as daemons on containers and also multiple container instances of the Virtual Autonomous Navigation Environment (VANE) that perform simulations across multiple compute nodes and push data back to the robotic operating system (ROS) kernel running on the head node. We use XFCE’s virtual desktop feature to provide a desktop interface to each of the provisioned worker nodes. We also explain how we built a custom iLauncher “CoVeR” plugin to automate the launch of the various services, and finally demonstrate running the Virtual Autonomous Navigation Environment (VANE) across multiple compute nodes via the Message Passing Interface (MPI).
