Description: An introduction of Docker’s experimental mode, Quick Emulator (QEMU) user static, and the Linux kernel’s miscellaneous binary format (binfmt_misc) capability kick off this event. Followed up with a demonstration of building a cross Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) singularity container (e.g. ARM64) on a Linux x86_64 machine and running the container on the HPC. The next part introduces QEMU as a type 2 hypervisor along with a discussion of how to execute an x86_64 runtime binary (e.g. Unity VR Engine) on a PPC64le machine via QEMU. We then cover performance implications of software virtualization and how to mitigate the slowdown by using multi-threaded acceleration. Issues regarding type 2 vs type 1 hypervisor performance, such as using the Linux’ Kernel Virtual Machine (KVM) or Xen which uses hardware virtualization round out the presentation.
